Regency Friday: Gowns

285455_418235184901228_1753753655_nWhen I think of Regency fashion, I think of discomfort. The poke bonnets that cut off your peripheral vision, gloves worn in summer as well as winter, and slippers that lace up your calves. But when I see a pretty muslin gown like this one, I am reminded that the Regency fashions for ladies were much more comfortable than the clothes that came before this period, and after. Stays are better than corsets, and muslin gowns and petticoats were less cumbersome than the layers of the Georgian period and the Victorian period. So the ladies in my novels are more comfortable than their mothers were and their daughters will be. But I’m still glad I can wear my jeans.
