Waterfalls Wednesday: Looking Glass Falls

Wednesday, September 30th, 2015 | Reflections, Waterfall Wednesdays | No Comments

When I first came to the mountains, long before I moved here, one of my favorite sights from the road was Looking Glass Falls. The sun was to bright when I took this picture, so this photo doesn’t do the waterfall justice…when you come to the mountains of western North Carolina, you’ll need to see it for yourself. It is lovely. But my attempt at a photo will give you some idea at least.

On my first visit to the falls, this butterfly was there to greet me, and I knew I had come home.

Regency Friday: Gowns

285455_418235184901228_1753753655_nWhen I think of Regency fashion, I think of discomfort. The poke bonnets that cut off your peripheral vision, gloves worn in summer as well as winter, and slippers that lace up your calves. But when I see a pretty muslin gown like this one, I am reminded that the Regency fashions for ladies were much more comfortable than the clothes that came before this period, and after. Stays are better than corsets, and muslin gowns and petticoats were less cumbersome than the layers of the Georgian period and the Victorian period. So the ladies in my novels are more comfortable than their mothers were and their daughters will be. But I’m still glad I can wear my jeans.

Waterfall Wednesdays: Hickory Nut Falls

Hickory Nut Falls 1

I ventured out into the wilderness last weekend…well, I went for a hike. I am no camper or Outdoors Woman, but I love natural beauty and Western NC is rotten with beauty. I visited Chimney Rock State Park near Bat Cave in Rutherford County and enjoyed walking up the mountain to view Hickory Nut Falls at the end of the trail. There hasn’t been much rain lately so the falls are thinner than usual, but as you can see, they are still lovely. Well worth the journey.
