Manuscript Locked and New Adventures Beginning

Monday, August 30th, 2010 | The Writing Life | 2 Comments

I got the best news while I was away in West Virginia…the manuscript for TO BE QUEEN is locked. Lovely! It is a happy sense of accomplishment to know that all the hard work going into the story of Eleanor’s rise to power as Duchess of Aquitaine and as Queen of France can now be directed into the next project. Though the work moves on, I am taking this moment to savor the joy of knowing that TO BE QUEEN is the best I could make it. Of course, I want the next book to be even better still, but that is where the continued work comes in.

Yet again, another beautiful place in West Virginia. The top of this mountain is wonderful. We had to take a chair lift up, and with my fear of heights, it was an adventure. We walked down the mountain later, which was steep, but I enjoyed it more. There were a lot of butterflies to visit with us on our way down.

Facing the Blank Screen

Every writer has to do it. Whether published or not, whether on the tenth book or the first, we all have to sit in front of the blank screen for the first time and write the first page. This is always daunting for me, even though I love it. Even though I know that there is more about Eleanor to be written than I will ever be able to write, even though I love and trust her as a character more than I ever would have thought possible, and even though she teaches me something new about her life with every draft I put on paper, that first moment is still daunting. The blank page stares at me with its white, blind eye, and I wonder, what will this book be like?

And then I start typing.

Because the only way to answer that question, the only way to find the path to the answer, is to begin.
