The Master by Colm Toibin

I found a wonderful book last week by Colm Toibin…THE MASTER was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2004 so I am a little late with this one, but better late than never.
My favorite quote from the novel so far:
“He wondered if this had happened to other writers who came before him, if Hawthorne or George Eliot had written to make the dead come back to life, had worked all day and all night, like a magician or an alchemist, defying fate and time and all the implacable elements to re-create a sacred life.”
Winter White

I had a different entry planned today, but there is snow falling in Manhattan. For everyone here (except the kids who get out of school), the snow is a minor to a major inconvenience. But to my southern eyes (we only had one real snowfall when I was a kid in Wilmington, NC) this winter white is beautiful.
There is something meditative in the sight of falling snow, and the blanket it casts on the upper levels of the city, on my bosses’ balcony for example, and along the rooflines. Though the snow gets muddy pretty quickly on the street level, above the fray, the peace of the snow looks like a blessing.
